The Artist’s Eye Project
Exclusive to Art/artefact and developed under the research of Audra Kiewiet de Jonge, The Artist’s Eye Project is a series of bejeweled portraits of women artists from history in antique jewelry as collectible conversation pieces about the female gaze.
A modern reframing of the Lover’s Eye–a highly intimate historical form of portraiture–to inspire contemporary conversation about art history and how, and for whom, it is recorded.
Each one-of-a-kind portrait is painted by London-based miniaturist Irene Owens and set in an antique gold and gemstone pin. The premier collection of 8 pieces will drop in March for Women’s History Month.
The collection includes portraits of Lavinia Fontana, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot, Willie “Ma Willie” Abrams, Anni Albers, Frida Kahlo, Lee Krasner, Françoise Gaime Gilot,
The intention is to spark conversation from this initial list of women artists whose artistic pursuits were limited by their status as women and whose careers were often overshadowed by the male artists in their lives.
Portraits are also available for commission, with the hope being to continue to add to the canon of women artists with each new piece.
