WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
Based on the antique, this contrapposto figure of Venus has exceptional proportion and grace.
All the gods of Classical Greek mythology were invited to a party, except for Eris, the goddess of strife. She had her revenge by throwing a golden apple with the inscription “To the fairest goddess” in among the party guests. But who the fairest of the goddesses was could not be agreed on. Therefore the choice was given to the earthly son of a king, Paris. The choice was between Juno, Minerva and Venus, and it was the latter, goddess of beauty and love, who won and received the apple. The sculpture depicts Venus after the beauty contest. With one hand she grips the clothes on the tree stump to put them back on. With the other she holds the token of beauty up to her admiring gaze.
Bertel Thorvaldsen was an internationally renowned neoclassical sculptor whose work is held in numerous museum collections.
P. Ipsen (Danish, 1815-1860) was a highly regarded ceramics manufacturer who studied at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory. His work is in the permanent collections of Neue Pinakothek in München, National Museum in Stockholm, Los Angeles Museum, Cleveland Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, National Museum of Finland in Helsinki, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen, Les Amis des Musees de la ville de Mons in Brussels, National Arts Club in New York City
The mark P. Ipsen Eneret is found on works made between 1871 and 1917.
